Drove the Outback through some deep snow yesterday. When I took it on the highway today it had a strong vibration throughout the car that wasn't there before, but felt like it was coming from the front wheels. Increased around 60 mph After pulling over and checking the wheels I found a chunk of ice about 2" square that had formed around the inside of the rear wheel. Couldn't have weighed more than a couple of ounces. Pried it off and the vibration was completely gone. Amazing how such a small amount of weight in the rear wheel could cause such a vibration. Reminded me of our Healey brake drums.

Rick,
Are your Rear Brake Drums balanced?

Yes, they are. Wheels are balanced, tires shaved for roundness and the scuttle shake reinforcements also done. No scuttle shake up to 100 mph.

Rick,

I did the same thing and it was probably one of the best investments I ever made on the car.
Hendrix Wire Wheel did all 4 wheels and tires plus the rear drums
and the car has never run smoother on the highway.

But what are the anti-scuttle shake reinforcements you mentioned?
I never heard of this modification.

Send some pics if available.

Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter,

The scuttle shake mods involved strengthening the doghouse area with angle iron and was developed by Bill Bolton and Keith Pennell. You can see it here: http://www.britishcarweek.org/scuttle.html I really took a shotgun approach to eliminate scuttle shake when I had the motor out to install the V8 and did all the things that were recommended so I can't tell which one mod or all of them did the trick. I agree, though, that I'd try drum balancing as my first try at eliminating the shake.

Rick,
The vibration from the tires and wheels was so violent that I use to pull over to the side of the road
during a ride to make sure the Knock-off's where still tight.

Unfortunately they were and the vibrations continued unabated until I had everything balanced correctly.
It was a totally different car after that.

I'll have to pass on the scuttle reinforcements this time.
Wish I knew about that in 2000 when I rebuilt the engine.

Regards,
Peter

Have you seen this?

Peter

Hadn't seen it, Peter. It's my wife's car, but none of mine will drive if there's more than a dusting of snow.
