Hi All,
Today I drove to a friend’s house to take pictures of his project cars. He is selling due to health reasons. The RHD 59 Bugeye had new floors welded in 40 years ago just prior to the sandblasting and primer coat. It has been stored for 40 years. There are no spots of rust on this car other than small specks of surface rust poking through the primer. That included the beads on the fenders/bonnet. I wish my Bugeye had metal like this.
Could a few of youknowledgeabl folks please chip in so I can tell him what a reasonable value might be?
Thanks,
Keith
P.S. A second post will show the 68 MK IV project car with the same question.

Hi Keith,

Car looks very solid. Given that the conversion from LHD to RHD is easy - an afternoon job if you have the parts - since the monocoque was built for both, the value is not really any different to a LHD chassis. May attract some UK buyers. Lots of questions though .....

#1 question is, does he have a Kansas title in his name ? Are the VIN tags with the car ?

What other parts are with the car ? Is the car complete ?

Is there a RHD dash and gauges ?

Are there seats - complete and what condition ?

Are there cockpit surround strips ?

Is there a number plate light plinth ?

Is there a heater and blower unit ?

Are there any new parts ?

Are there parts already reconditioned ? After 40 years most rubber bits will need replacement.

Hardtop will need reconditioning but maybe adds $300 - $500

Is the wiring harness usable ? After 40 years, maybe not.

Is there a soft top ? Roof bow ? Tonneau cover ? Condition ?

Are there window frames ? Condition ?

Wire wheels add some value over original wheels I guess - does it have disc brake setup for front ?

Is the engine a matching numbers 948 with smooth case trans or has it been upgraded to 1275 with rib case ? Has it been rebuilt ?

Depending on the above questions, a good chassis Bugeye - absolutely no metal work required - mostly complete with tags, correct title, wire wheels / disc brakes and the bonus hardtop should fetch $4,500 to $5,000 depending on engine and gearbox with the car. Other parts mentioned are expensive and hard to find, so if missing, value will drop. Shipping will be a bear, given the car is in parts and assume no engine and gearbox installed.

Cheers
Lew

Tub only orparts and pieces needed to put it back together? Possibly $2k $3k if it Has all parts and pieces. By the time you are done to do it right and painted over $20k invested and that’s if you can do majority of work yourself.

Title yes, engine and transmission, no. 1098 w/tranny available.
Some new parts most of the old ones like the heater, etc.
Flat dash needs all parts redone. He stated the RHD to LHD is quick and showed me how, if you have the parts is no big deal.
Old instruments in boxes.
Roof bow, tonneau. Not sure about a cloth top. Has a welded in rollbar.
Window frames, needs new plexi.
Needs a new windshield and rubber.
Has bare seat frames, but needs a complete interior otherwise.

OK, sounds like quite a few parts would be needed including windshield, complete seat kit and an engine and gearbox - probably 1275 and rib case preferred to 1098 or original 948 by most restorers.

Without original engine and gearbox or a 1275 with ribcase, the value drops quite a bit. I still think if most parts are in boxes, it should be worth at least $3,000 - $3,500.

To freshen your memory, the RHD Sprite steering rack is a LHD Morris Minor and visa versa. Both readily available from UK suppliers as well as in the US if you choose.

Well, thanks guys. I will pass along your comments and try to help him advertise. He actually wants the Bugeye and the MKIV to leave as a package deal.

You are looking for someone who wants a project, not someone who wants to drive a sprite. My suggestion would be to list it on Bring A Trailer.

People spend 5k in tin to bring their rusted out shells back to life, so dont undersell yourself if you have the time to find a buyer.
