Just as I thought I had managed to adapt my new Panasport wheels to my S2000 suspension, I developed clutch trouble. Hopefully, my master cylinder replacement journey will help some others in a similar spot:

It was a long 8 months to rebuild the engine that, through an error in judgement, I melted. But she held up well under full horsepower. Not many '67 MG's are sliding around an autocross course these days!

            <i><a href='https://www.mgexp.com/journal/Jeff-Hemphill.5757/Mixed-Emotions-On-The-New-MG.22883/'>Jeff Hemphill's Journal</a></i> -- <br /><br />
So, I was briefly in Germany last week and a colleague (who works in our battery start-up) said he wanted to be sure to eat his own cooking; so he needed an electric car. Well, it just so happens that SAIC (a Chinese OEM) has introduced a whole line of BEV's based on the MG brand which they purchased in 2005 (or rather was purchased by another Chinese company which they later acquired). So, I could not resist getting some photos. I hereby express my mixed feelings:

Against:
-I was absolutely disgusted when I heard that a Chinese company had bought my beloved brand (in which my Mom and Dad taught me to drive!).
-Most of these are not remotely related to a roadster.
-China is a long damn way from England!
-Holy crap, I really have gained a lot of weight!
-What the F*&%$ is going on!!

For:
-At least someone recognized the value of this magnificent brand. Why that wasn't a US or EU company is a topic for a longer post.
-I was actually moved to see that logo on a car again!
-At least their first launch, the Cyberster (I'd have gone somewhere else with the name...) was a proper roadster.
-They use MG as their export brand, which is true to the English MG which I think I remember also sent somewhere around 2/3's of their cars for export.
-This affords a chance for a generational conversation: "No, no, Kaylie, that's not an actual MG. Let me tell you about Morris Garages!"

Again, mixed feelings. Curious to hear reactions... <br /><br />

I had a tough experience last summer (It was a cruel, cruel summer!). I melted the seals out of the rotary engine I have installed in my '67 MGB. The extent of the damage is recorded here:

I made foolish assumptions about this winter's project, but it worked out well. Just a few extra hours. And I have one of the few MGB's with negative camber and lowered ride height plus raised roll center. The local parking lot autocross will prove out how well those physics work! Can't wait!

My goal remains the same: Gift a British roadster with the tech that her spirit has earned! I was making good progress until this year. The sad tale of the tape can be found at

This winter I'm doing 90% less, so maybe I'll see better results!

In any case, keep having #funwithcars! <br /><br />

One of the many reconfigurations of space required to get an RX8 rotary engine to fit into an MGB surrounds the metering oil pump. I was surprised to learn that a rotary is lubricated like a two-stroke with an injection pump. Sadly, that pump is inside the frame rail in an MGB, so it had to be relocated. The tale is here:

The Renesis motor is not very efficient (although it possesses other virtues) which means it needs a very effective cooling system! I describe how I managed that at this post: https://www.theoldmanandthemgb.com/2021/09/cooling-system-did-you-know-that-your.html

The most challenging part of swapping a Renesis RX-8 rotary engine into BB is the electrical system. The Mazda was ahead of it's time in security and there is basically no hope of making the engine run outside it's original car with the stock Engine Control Unit. Therefore, I bought a racing ECU to which I only had to connect 19 wires. That did not go so well, however. The rest of the tale is told here:

Part of the journey of swapping an RX-8 engine into my '67 MGB, is the new cold air intake. This was actually one of the easier parts of this project. Good thing I don't drive BB in the rain, as this intake would suck water off a moist road! In any case, keep having #funwithcars!

While swapping in an RX-8 engine, I of course had to provide sufficient fuel pressure for a port injected engine. This proved expensive but not especially difficult. The journey is documented here:

In swapping out the engine for 2.5x the horsepower, a much larger exhaust is needed. This leads to a comparison of real energy density between batteries and gasoline! I love engineering! The right answer is never obvious but always available!

Humans need levers to deal with the world. Our physical gifts are pathetic next to most creatures, so we use machines to multiply our might! That seems quite grand for a description of a shift knob, but consider that with that shifter, you control the flow of hundred's of horsepower to the road! Now that's fun!

This is a silly waste of time but brings great pleasure with every key on! There was a time, maybe in the 90's?, where the speedo and tach "flared" to full scale and settled to zero on key on. Since my mission is to raise an MGB to modern standards, I can hardly avoid a side trip to the 90's.

As part of the dash restoration project, I tackled cleaning and painting the fuel gauge. My goodness! The needle is actually made of Aluminum foil! I bent the crap out of everything. It seems impossible that I got it straight again but it is working today and gets compliments at the autocross! I started a Summer project to clean and lubricate my speedometer and tachometer. This proved to be very different from other automotive work as it is more like watch repair! It also lasted a full year, including roughly one hundred and one removals of each gauge! However, they are now giving pleasing service, which after 53 years, is a small miracle with or without my clumsy efforts!

Here are some photo's and description of what went right and wrong while fabricating a way to mount an original MGB rear sway bar to a Honda S2000 IRS that I chopped down and welded into my MG! Hard to believe I managed that as I drive her around today.

A colleague asked this question after I had built a Honda IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) into my '67 MGB ("BB"). At first, I was offended, but I learned better at my first Autocross, where bolts from 3 years ago were found missing and I lost a critical link from this Winter's work!

Anyway, nothing will ever equal Autocrossing a 53 year old MGB against a field of modern cars and finishing near the average time!

The Winter was mild but protracted as I worked on the Independent Rear Suspension conversion for my '67 MBG ("BB"). This has been a huge challenge but worthwhile so far! The bulk of the new suspension comes from a Honda S2000 with associated shortening, sawing, welding, and fabrication! What a journey!

I have experience with MG electrical systems and so, felt much better having a voltmeter installed. It's a good thing I did! I had installed the cheapest available dynamo and one day saw the voltmeter sink to zero! The blog post will show how I learned what a field coil is and repaired everything. Btw, there was not a sausage in the dynamo!
