Hi Listers,
I am in the process of rebuilding the entire brake system on my car. My question to you is: Wheel cylinders are $30 at Victoria British; $38 at Moss and to have them re-sleeved and re-built at White Post Restorations is $80 each. I was told that the cylinders now being sold are made in China and will only last a few years. I know the re-built ones are guaranteed for life.
For all 6 cylinders this comes up to a big financial difference.
Any thoughts?

This might make a difference in your decision, but the wheel cyl sleeving at
Sierra Specialty in Quincy CA. is $55 for each. I've used them all and this
is the best place I've found.
Remember, you'll also need to add in the rebuild kit prices.

For a modern car expected to go a few more years, go cheap. A 50 year old
car will likely be around many more years. Do it right for you and the next
guy. Doing it cheap twice costs about as much as doing it right once.

Guys and Gals,
I hate being a pain in the ass but this brake thing has me pulling my hair
out. Bugeye with disc brakes and late dual wheel cylinder rear drums. New
everything, MC, Rotors, Calipers, hoses, pads and shoes. When I bleed the
brakes I get a nice hard pedal but both of the front brakes won't release,
rears are fine. My first thought is that the MC push rod is too tight, but
not so. I have it set at between 1/8 and 1/4 of free play and the spring
pulls it back to the stop. The MC is the new 7/8 Lucas from Pierce
Manifolds and many others. I know it is retained pressure in the system
because I can loosen a bleed screw and then the rotors are free. There has
been comments that some MC's have a valve on the brake side to restrict
fluid flow, I see it in the Moss catalog under their rebuild kits. I have
been hesitant to take the MC apart and look because others have said that
they have used the same MC without a problem. What the hell am I missing?

You may have switched clutch/brake master push rods on re-assembly.
Try adjusting the brake push rod.
A gnat's ass too tight and you will lock up the brakes. BTDT.

I have the rod with a 1/4 inch of slack at the moment. I can even take the
rod out and they are still locked. It's got to be the MC. I took the leaky
one apart and sure enough there is a small valve in the end of the spring, a
little white plastic disc with some sort of membrane over one side. Suppose
they improved on the idea in the new master's? BZ didn't you grab one of
these too? Put it in yet?
