Help - the Wisco driving season is finally here and my Bugeye is 'missing' in
action.

I've got a terrible miss at medium throttle and low speed under load. When I
put it into second it just stutters. At higher speeds it still doesn't wind
out. This all started last Autumn. When I rev it in the garage I can hear the
hint of a miss. After test drives, sometimes one or more plugs are sooty,
often times all are clean. It idles well.

I didn't make any changes before this happened. Details: stock 1275, twin HS2s
w/ AAC needles and blue springs, Facet fuel pump with Holley regulator,
Mallory dual point dizzy and coil, new wires, NGK 6ES plugs.

I get a good steady spark at all cylinders per timing light. Timing is good;
advance is good. I checked the carbs many times, also switched and switched
out suction discs and chambers. I checked the jets, moved the flats in and
out. Tried different levels of dashpot oil (10W). I checked the floats.

What am I 'missing' here? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Hurry
- the Wisco driving season isn't that long!

Thanks.

Bud

Bud,
I'd guess intake leak somewhere. Tighten stuff,
including the air rail plugs you may have in your 1275
cylinder head. I'm fighting the same thing today on
the street Bugeye, car ran similar to how you
describe. I just messed with the intake system, so
that's the first stop. Old gas can't be doing much for
me either, although it was half the price of the 5
gallons I picked up for it a few minutes ago. I'm
checking the valves in a minute, too.

Fuel or spark.
I suspect something with the spark. If you're desperate change out the
plugs, points, rotor and cap. I suspect the plug wires (especially if it is
the same plugs that soot up.) Change out the condenser. I've had two in the
last 50 years that were faulty when new. They'd vibrate at certain rpm's
causing the engine to cut out. The spark wires could be shorting out or
there might be a crack in the distributor cap. Look for sparking corona in
the engine bay in a dark garage at night. ...bill

Check compression?

Checkvalve clearances and condition of valve train?

I had experienced similar symptoms with an MGB. It was a clogged fuel filter starving the carbs, but it sounds like you already checked those parts.

Well, it was too much air/not enough fuel, but random.
No leaks, compression checked fine, valves were spot
on. Plugs looked great on rear 2, crappy on front 2.
But it's a Weber - WTF? I found the damn screw that
holds one of the venturis on the brand new,
run-today-for-the-first-time Weber backed out
completely (lock tabs are useless) and the venturi was
spinning like dial-a-mixture. It is somewhere between
the garage and the end of the block. That exact thing
happened to me at Road America 2 years ago and the
screw was laying on the shock absorber - it had been
there for 2 laps. On THAT car I reinstalled with
safety wire. On this carb, it was brand new so I
didn't touch it. The quality on the new Weber appears
to be a big notch down from the pre-strike days, like
the one I regret selling last year....

For those of you who have seen my son Bobby do a 1000
piece jigsaw in an hour or 2...he walked down the
street this morning for me and found the screw in the
grass in about 2 minutes. Amazing.

Oh, yeah

the heald of those little bolts that hold in the aux vent have tiny holes for safety wire.
