That guy who was saved by a Highway Patrol car. . the CHP guy got in front
of his Prius.
He was asked why he didn't shift into neutral? His answer, "I was afraid
that I would accidentally shift into reverse!" So he burned out the brakes
keeping the car at around 80 mph.
And what is it with these people that they cannot cut the ignition? If your
car gets stuck and you cannot pull the pedal up. . cut the ignition and
leave it in gear. It will come to a stop and you will not have to burn out
the brakes!
Is the ignition stuck on at the same time that the gas pedal sticks? I
really do not think so?
Looks like they panic and lose their logical thinking processes?

And they expect us to believe that a Prius can do 90mph with a grown
man standing on the brake pedal. Turns out the guy is in foreclosure
and bankruptcy and desperate for money, WITH a history of "losing"
things to collect on the insurance. Coincidence? I think not.

You DO NOT want to turn the key off and risk having the steering wheel lock
up. Also, many cars now have the proximity push button, rather than using a
key.
That still doesn't excuse someone being to stupid to slip it into neutral.

I don't know what year his is/was, but it's likely a new one with a
push button ignition like your computer.. Windows.
Press On to turn off, or some such illogical "intuitive" symbols.
The shifter is a phallus protruding from the dash with a zippered scrotum.
I'm not sure it's not a computer "glitch". There are some Camry's
that magically turn left, electronically.
It's not just Toyota. There's some "piling on" here by the press, I think.

So if you push the button with it on, will it shut off?
I never started a "modern" car with a push button.
An old Mini, Sprite, and an old Volvo with a busted ign switch all had
push buttons to start em but if you switched off the key (or ignition
switch)
The car would die.
On a modern car if you switch the key off one click, it will die, the
steering only locks if you pull the key out.
At least in my 01 truck and 03 Jaguar. Neither have a push button
starter though.
It all boils down to this.....
We have dumbed down the sheeple of this country to a point where they
can not think at all, let alone think for themselves.
My wife was just telling me about her friend from work,
They went to lunch in her car, Diane notice a very low tire, Carol said
her husband will check it out over the weekend.
This was Monday, Diane said just stop and get air, Carol had no idea how
to put air in a tire.
So Diane did it. Now how can a 50 something year old woman not have a
clue as to putting air in a tire?
I taught my daughter how to change her own oil, change a flat tire,
inspect her tires, gave her a brief idea as to what the front end is and
does, what to listen for or what to do in case of an emergency. And I
told her about brake fad and what to do incase the gas pedal got stuck.
And I did this when she was 17, she is now 27 and when the tire shop
told her she needed a new transintoxicator relay valve, she said fine,
I'll pick one up after you install my new tires and install it myself.

I guess people get panicked. A shift to neutral and use of the brakes seems
would do the trick to stop the car.
Interesting article on the "Missile Launch Audi 5000" built in the 1980's.
Brock Yates takes an objective look at the situation, being able to thwart a
"run away" Audi with the brakes.

Yep, and it's now at the point where you can't seperate true problem incidence from
mass hysteria. Any Toyota involved in an accident at this time is now subject to the
hyper-paraniodal microscopic scrutinizer. This is followed up with a fifteen minute
expose on CNN and a few phone calls to Toyota from the concerned constituent's local
congressman.
Sure sucks to be a Toyota engineer right now.

I gave a keynote address last week to an aerospace supplier's excellence alliance group (rockfordil.com/news-from-the-region/latest/p/item/457). To emphasize the point that what you do today has a profound and sometimes indelible influence on a company, I asked everyone to clear their minds, close their eyes and rewind to, say, October 2009. I asked the audience to shout out one word, free-associated with the word I was going to say. I said the word "Toyota". The crowd shouted back "quality". I asked them to fast forward to today, and asked what word they would shout out. I got "defects, lawsuits, crap...", etc.
It takes decades to build a reputation, and seconds to destroy it. Like it or not, perception is reality. I also asked the open ended question as to whether the group thought the the problem was caused by a lack of lean manufacturing, or an excess of it. Tough answer.

Well, I know there is at least one Prius driver on this list. No, not me.
But I'll bet he doesn't appreciate being called "not too smart" for driving
a Prius. Does "conservative" necessarily mean completely devoid of
intelligent thought? You make it seem so. And not the first time, I might
add.

Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings on the list. I'm a 'conservative'.

I don't see any logic about the steering locking if you withdraw the key to
switch off the engine as you could always put the key back in again real
quick without a problem unless you were attempted this on a twisty road....

I'd have thought any Prius driver on the list has to be the exception to
the rule as they own a spridget!

This summer, I picked up a '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee... I bought it quite
cheap, as it needed a few things fixed. (Larry went with me.)
One morning, I was on the way to the dentist... and realized I'd neglected
to bring my phone, so I returned to my home, parked halfway on the grass,
slightly uphill, on the left side of the road, and ran in. I came back out,
and my Jeep was gone. It had rolled down the hill, and was smashed up
against a small pine tree in the neighbor's yard down by the lake.
It had broken a well casing in her yard, and water was gushing out of the
ground like a geyser. The Jeep was still running. I couldn't understand how
this happened, as the idle is high enough on the Jeep that you'd have no
chance getting out of the door is you'd left it in reverse while running. (I
later found out that this Jeep had never gone in for the recall to fix the
detent ball in the trans or linkage that had caused numerous other
Chrysler/Jeep owners the same problem.) If it hadn't hit the tree, it either
would have roller through her living room, or all the way down to the lake.
I was slightly embarrassed as I called my insurance guy and explained. He
said not to worry, as something similar had happened to him just the night
before. His family was sitting in his Prius in their driveway, when it
started on its own, and lurched into their other car in the driveway.
Remember, this took place late summer '09, before Toyota's shit hit the fan.
