Solved
I went to put the oil slinger on but the key for the crankshaft gear does not stick out past the gear for it to go onto even though the gear is tight against the end of the crankshaft. Looking at a new gear, one side has a taper so I wonder if that is the side that faces in? It is interesting that that is the side of the gear that has the dot for timing chain placement even though I used the count the teeth method that worked perfect. I want to try it if I could get the crankshaft gear back off.

It sounds like you have the gear on backwards. The side with the timing dot needs to be on the outside (front of the engine). If you have the timing dot towards the block, how could you 'count the teeth method'. Also, the chain teeth are not centered on the gear so if backwards the teeth will be misaligned with the cam sprocket & even though it might work initially, the chain will wear very fast. You should check sprocket alignment with a straight edge.
First pic shows the offset of the teeth to the sprocket (beveled side it the one with the timing dot and goes to the outside)
2nd pic shows the oil slinger - notice it is not held by the Woodruff key, it only has a keyway so it can be installed after the keys are in the crank but is then held in place by being pinched between the sprocket behind and the damper in front.
