So finally swapped out my gearbox and engine. Went to a ribcage box cause my smooth case had a bad rear seal and chipped 1st gear. My 948 was good but I was gifted an auto cross engine. It was bored out to 998 years ago and the cylinders still showed some cross hatching. But the oil rings and some of the compression rings were toast. Got some rings from eBay and with some creative garage machinery got them to work. Burning some oil. Not sure what the compression is. Hoping the rings just need to seat in. It has been getting better. What do you guys think? https://youtube.com/shorts/CmjE9c-LCG8?si=MGDEzIG5IQI_IcrG

I used the head that was in my old engine. It was a 12G295 head that I rebuilt 10 months ago

Mike, are you sure the engine is burning oil and not leaking ?

If you watch the video you can see the blueish smoke when I rev the engine up and down in RPM.
Strange though is that at a steady throttle off of idle you don't get the smoke.
Engine is leaking very little. Maybe a couple drops. I did the JB Weld trick at the rear rifling seal if you can call it a seal.

So took a drive this morning and when I got to my destination I raved the engine and got very little smoke. I think I’m good. I’ll do a compression test and keep an eye on oil consumption. Thanks everyone for your input. Cheers. Mike

Checked the compression with the engine warm and it was around 105psi for each cylinder. Nice that they were even across the board but that seems very very low.
This 998 (bored out 948) definitely has more gusto than my 948 which had maybe around 125psi compression.

With the low compression I guess I could put a Super Charger on it smiling smiley

Try a Leak Down test if you want to find out where the compression issue is.

How many times you crank it? WOT?

I crank it till the compression gauge stops.
I've tried WOT and closed throttle compression tests in the past
and never seen a difference. It's a cheap Pittsburg tester from Harbor Freight.

Might try a different one just for sanity sake.

Nice its uniform.

Oreillys and AutoZone do FREE rental of tools. Pay up front and credit back on return. Autozone lets you keep em longer.
I think they have Compression Gauges, not sure about Leak Down Tester
