The manual says connect the D and F terminal of the dynamo together with a wire and then connect the volt meter negative wire and earth the positive wire and run the engine at 750 rpm. Does this sound correct?

Which manual are you reading? Bentley or Haynes. Guidelines in the Bentley are typically correct, but I don't trust Haynes for accuracy.

As a '68 you should be Negative Ground. IS that the reason for your question? '68 was the year they changed from Positive to Negative Ground.

Switch over was actually November '67, beginning with car numbers HAN9-72044/GAN460441

According to Bentley manual, Connections are correct. As you increase RPM, meter should not fluctuate. Do not allow meter to reach 20 volts; do not exceed 1000 RPM in attempt to get a higher voltage reading.

Next step: Get yourself a Bentley manual.
